Tulsa, OK self-described "indie psych" band, Zunis, have really done the damn thing with their newest EP !
"Earth To Self", the follow up to their debut EP, "Self-Titled", shows a serious amount of growth and evolution on the band's part, showcasing a radio-ready sound that is much more honed and matured than their previous release. When it came out, "Self-Titled" showed a lot of promise for the band's audible future, and Zunis have absolutely delivered, and then some, on the development of their sound on "Earth To Self".
Honestly, when we first listened to "Earth To Self", our jaws dropped from the overall extremely high production quality of the music (some big local names were involved in the EP's recording and engineering) and the "new Zunis" sound. With this new release, listeners will find a refreshing, reinvigorating take on the Tulsa indie scene sound and more. Zunis delivers a killer indie/alternative rock sound that satisfies all the desires of the average indie music listener's palette, while tastefully pushing the boundaries further with innovation within the genre through their incorporation of experimental, jazz, and psychedelic styles of music. The result is an EP that has mass appeal and listenability, while simultaneously challenging conventions of the genre to create a unique, distinct sound. In other words, it's extremely tasteful music.
Overall, the EP keeps a very upbeat tone, but there are certainly softer portions and even ambient, experimental sounds and scapes that create quite the atmosphere throughout the release. Each track has a singular, original sound but the EP manages to maintains cohesiveness throughout with every song a complement to the whole. There was obviously a ton of thought and effort put in to this sophomore project, and the musicianship of those involved really shines through. Production and engineering wise, the album is damn near, if not, flawless - definitely one of the best produced local albums we have heard in a while.
Though "Self-Titled" was a great release, this time around, Zunis have seriously leveled up. Don't be surprised if you start hearing "Earth To Self" in heavy mass rotation or if you catch Zunis crawling through one of your city's venues. Zunis have truly committed to their craft. Bangers ! ! !
