about

"Christmas Selections on the Pipe Organ" was the brain baby of Cult Love's Natty Gray (an avid Christmas music fan and excessively nostalgic individual) and an attempt at creating a richly traditional Christmas album that could both fulfill the needs and desires of a rigidly religious, old fashioned listener and simultaneously appeal to and be appreciated by practitioners and enjoyers of fringier, more niche genres such as sound art, experimental compositions, drone, etc.

The ultimate Cult Love compromise between all the sonic worlds we encompass, a release we had our hands in producing from inception to completion. Deeply personal and sentimental, an album that took many friends' contributions in order to finish (just check the credits!). A nondenominational Christmas album per say, haha, or maybe more aptly described as a general Xmas album for all people.

Casey Cantwell is the music director and organist of Trinity Episcopal Church in downtown Tulsa. A good friend and incredibly talented individual, Casey was more than happy to see our dream come to fruition on the church's organ. Speaking of the church's pipe organ, the Trinity website describes it as a "culmination of the efforts of many devoted parishioners, benefactors and craftsmen, and is a singular work of art. It is a Moller Organ, Opus 9606, and was built in 1961. Original specification include pipes from 1 1/3 foot up to 32 feet, with sounds ranging from Flute Harmonique (4') to English Horn (8'), from Sub Bourdon (32') to Clarion (4'), multiple chimes, and an ear piercing Trompette Fanfare (8'). With four full manuals and 2 1/2 octaves of pedals, and countless registrations, it provides enough music to fill the entire building." And was built after the first world war when a Bishop Thurston encouraged the parish to build "a gothic church of cathedral like proportions". Truly, the organ at Trinity church is an enormous, spectacular work of art in and of itself as well as a jaw droppingly gorgeous instrument and feat of human engineering.

Casey curated all the tracks on this album. With an aim for more obscure holiday carols, some of the selections are probably a little less well known by the general public and side B of the tape even features wonderful improvisations from Casey on some holiday songs that never received formal arrangements for the organ. The spirit of the season is whisperingly and blisteringly present in this album and "Christmas Selections on the Pipe Organ" features an expansive variety of dynamics and sounds. There are classic, ear rattling songs such as, "In dulci jubilo" as well as much gentler, even occasionally ominous, sounding tracks such as "What child is this?". Us at Cult Love are confident in saying that this is a damn near, if not perfect, Christmas album that could quite frankly be enjoyed at anytime of the year. And we are ecstatic to finally bring it to the public. Happy holidays from our family to yours!
