Tulsa's Backskin summons forth richly traditional black metal that is in similar veins to many of the acts coming from Europe in the 90's. Backskin's production is raw and tru without a loss in audio quality, Destiny of Steel and Blood's sound is fabulous as well as tasteful. The guitars are high and gritty with beefy, blasting drums beneath, and topped with quintessential bm, throat scraping vocals.

Complete with the dungeon synth intro, Backskin's "Destiny of Steel and Blood" tears through a fantastical land of warriors and battlefields. The riffs range from utterly vile and nasty to foreboding and haunted, and occasionally even lean in to more melodic moments or a thrashy chord progression. The drums are merciless and are mostly made up of fierce blasts, pummeling like a winter blizzard. The vocals are very traditional, cold and scathing, however, there are fleeting moments where this sound is departed upon, such as the final track, "Elegy of the Warlord", in favor of a little spoken word.

Overall, Backskin's "Destiny of Steel and Blood" is a superbly produced take on the traditional black metal sound and tropes. A ripper from start to finish, any fans of the genre will have a hard time not loving this album as it tastefully elevates many of the best facets of black metal and precisely executes them.
